FOR EASTER-BASKET TREATS: THE PERFECT OLD-FASHIONED CONFECTIONERY
A couple weeks ago I was in Philadelphia to see family and the excellent Van Gogh show at the Phila. Art Museum. I insisted we also visit an old-fashioned soda fountain I’d read about, The Franklin Fountain, at 116 Market, which absolutely did not disappoint. My son said the root beer float was the best he’d ever had (and he’s an aficionado). But a terrific new discovery was the Shane Confectionery, two doors down at 110 Market (in the Old City section, close to the river). Established in 1911, it was reopened late last year by the same brothers who started the Franklin Fountain. And what a jewel it is! The interior has been restored to its turn-of-the-century glory, with elegant glass cases displaying their candy-colored confections and chocolates. I stocked up on unique goodies for my boys’ Easter baskets, including (spoiler alert, kids!) a saxophone-playing chocolate bunny and a sailor chocolate bunny; the most delicious caramel eggs with a robin’s-egg candy coating (um, hmm, those may not make it to the Easter baskets … ), old-fashioned barley candy rabbits and ducks in translucent pastels, still made in Philadelphia, and quite a few other novelties. It is truly a treat to shop there. If you are in the Philly area, you should check out both Shane’s and the Franklin Fountain—you won’t be disappointed!
